Epidemiology
It is difficult to assess the trends of eating disorder epidemiology for two reasons.(1) First of all, this is an illness characterized by denial and secrecy, therefore self-report may not be reliable. Furthermore, over time there have been changes in the diagnostic criteria.(1)
AN is the third most frequent chronic illness in adolescents, affectingapproximately 8 in 100,000 people per year. (2,3) The estimated lifetime prevalence of DSM-IV anorexia nervosa is 0.9% in women and 0.3% in men.(4) The prevalence rate in Western countries is higher than in non-Western countries(world gui) with 90% of cases occurring in females.(5) Moreover, this illness can occur starting in late childhood to adulthood.(1)The two peak ages of onset for AN are 14 and 18 years of age1. After 40 years of age new cases are rarely diagnosed. Furthermore, rates of relapse within 1 year are approximately 30%.(5)
